The Importance of Agricultural Education in Urban Communities

Most individuals are now four generations removed from agriculture. Because of this, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the farming and ranching industries. It is important, now more than ever, to educate others about where their food comes from.

The Texas Oil Ranch operates on 56 acres and is home to many different types of livestock including cattle, goats and horses. The farm has been family-owned and operated for over four decades with the mission to educate visitors in fun and exciting ways. By giving guests a hands-on experience on a working ranch, the Oil Ranch hopes to emphasize the importance of agricultural education in Houston’s urban communities. Learn how our activities are encouraging education about agriculture below:

Dairy Barn

Our Dairy Barn allows visitors to learn more about the dairy industry. Visitors have the chance to hand-milk Daisy, the farm’s Holstein cow. While in the barn, check out our educational exhibit detailing the modern milking process.

Petting Zoo

The petting zoo gives visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with our animals. Filled with goats, sheep and other smaller livestock, the petting zoo is perfect for all ages.

Mechanical Roping Horse

Experience real cowboy life on top of our trusted horse, Dynamite. Our mechanical roping horse allows children to try their hand at lassoing a calf. Modern day cowboys still ride horseback to herd cattle and take care of them daily.

Pony Rides

Children ages 12 and under will enjoy our pony rides. Our ranch hands will give each child one-on-one attention as they lead them around the arena and coach them how to properly ride a horse.

Agricultural education is integral to maintaining the farming and ranching industries. It is our hope the Oil Ranch educates visitors and gives them newfound knowledge. Get out of the city and visit the Oil Ranch to support agriculture!
